How to Save on Long Distance - Should You Use Calling Cards?

For many years now, I have been working on ways to keep my long distance bills down. I have been working on creative ways to make calls to my friends and family as well as make it painless for them to call me. I have learned that VoIP is a great way to save on long distance. I use to spend money on calling cards, figuring that was the cheapest way to keep my telephone bills at the regular monthly rate. The problems I find with calling cards are:

* They Expire- You usually have 3 months to use up the calling card after it’s first use or it will expire. Normally this is not a problem but sometimes I misplace the card for weeks at a time and then when I am about to use it again, I will find out that it is no longer active.

* Unreliable- Sometimes when you are about to call someone on a calling card, you cannot get through because the system is busy.
* Quality issues- When I make a call on my calling cards I find that there is an echoing of my voice. This is very annoying.
* Inconvenience- Just when you are in the midst of a really good conversation, you find out that your minutes are about to expire. You usually get cut off in the middle of your conversation which is really frustrating. Sometimes is not so convenient to go out and buy another calling card and pick up your conversation where you left off.
* Inconsistent- When you are buying a calling card for use in North America for example, you might find a great calling card that has 500 minutes and is only 1 cent per minute. That sounds great until you read the fine print. Your 500 minutes might quickly disappear once you pay the connection fee, maintenance fee and surcharges.
